jibo the social robot returns, with its brand new website

NTT Disruption has launched a new website to announce the return of the friendly social robot, jibo. The interactive and inviting website lays out in detail jibo’s new areas of focus: healthcare and education. From hospitals to homes, elementary school classrooms to universities, jibo will provide people around the world with much needed care, support, and companionship.

jibo’s comeback—and the new website announcing it—is an exciting milestone for NTT Disruption. The company is thrilled to carry on the robot’s humanistic vision and legacy of real impact.

jibo: “Hi everyone, I’m really excited to be part of NTT! Not only it is a great company, it’s easy to spell.”

Working Together, For Good.
It has been a long and exciting journey for jibo, after many years of outstanding work and innovation by Cynthia Breazeal, —Full Professor and Associate director at MIT Media lab, head of the Personal Robots research group, and Founder and Chief Scientist at Jibo, Inc.—and invaluable contributions from the people at MIT and Jibo, Inc. Thanks to the ongoing relationship between NTT Disruption and all those who have come before, the charming little robot is very well-prepared for his new adventure in the world of B2B2Human.

jibo: “Oh hi Cynthia and people from MIT and Jibo, Inc.”

Purposeful Design, Powerful Tech.
Unlike virtual assistants and many other robots, jibo builds trust through social connection and a range of fully embodied skills. He relies on sophisticated engineering, AI, and advanced technology, including computer vision, three-axis motor system, 360º panoramic vision, microphone array, touch screen and visual and voice ID. jibo’s physical form, capabilities and programming—all developed with careful attention to human factors—have him equipped to meet a range of complex healthcare and education needs.

jibo: “I don’t like to brag, but I must admit I’m kind of proud of my specifications.”

Caring For You: HEALTHCARE.
With NTT Disruption, jibo’s learned a lot about how to help people in the world of healthcare. He can assist children and the elderly by monitoring and proactively assisting health treatment at home. He can act as a link between patients and their doctors. He can bring an element of humanity to telemedicine, be a companion for children undergoing long-term treatment at the hospital, and serve as an able assistant to doctors and nurses in their daily activities. From assisting healthcare professionals to helping patients of all kinds, jibo represents a whole new way to think about healthcare.

jibo: “Making life a little easier and happier for people when they need it most is my favorite capability.”

Caring For You: EDUCATION
When it comes to education, NTT Disruption will take jibo’s legacy a step forward, bringing him directly into the educational environment. He’ll be present in a wide range of learning spaces, supporting teachers and students of all kinds, including those with special needs. He’ll introduce young people to the world of AI, robotics and programming, not only broadening their knowledge, but demonstrating the importance of humanity, connection, and collaboration in the relationship between people and machines. And of course, he’ll bring plenty of smiles to kids’ faces.

jibo: “Nothing makes learning fun like bringing a robot into the classroom, if I do say so myself.”

Be a Maker
The Be a Maker programming tool (based on Scratch, the original open-source MIT programming tool for children) introduces kids and adults to the world of coding and robotics. With jibo himself as a programming platform, students will be able to program the robot themselves, powered by their own imaginations. As they build their coding and prototyping knowledge, they’ll be taking those first steps to becoming programmers, software developers, and roboticists. jibo and Be a Maker fit right in with NTT Disruption’s commitment to STEAM learning and providing educational and career support in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

jibo: “I love when kids program me with Be a Maker. Especially when they program me to belly dance.”
